OF MOTHERS AND MEN

Performances by Lupita Asto, Melissa Sarai, Adwoa Duncan-Williams, Alexis Damita, Georgina Morillo and Hayley Nyota.

Derived from the American classic OF MICE AND MEN, OF MOTHERS AND MEN explores the varying relationships between women, their mothers, and the men in their lives. This monologue-driven piece (compromised of six vignettes) dives into the pivotal roles of two of the most influential people in one’s life.

The cast is made up of an array of multicultural women discussing various topics prevalent to women. Included in the cast is the Writer/Director/Founder of The Black Latina Movement, Crystal Shaniece Roman. Ms. Roman wrote the piece as a tribute to the many paths these intricate relationships often take. Instead of holding steadfast to the typical tropes of romance, beauty, and the ideal family, Ms. Roman uses topics like sexual molestation, abortion, and self-advancement as vehicles to discuss and define these relationships. The results provide the viewer with an atypical and multilayered approach to defining social activism and feminism.

The Black Latina Movement is a vibrant grassroots theater and film production company based in New York City. Alongside creating and producing our own works, The Movement’s priority endeavor is to make the entertainment industry culturally and artistically richer by showcasing the talents of men and women in the arts. This open platform provides artists of all kinds the opportunity to create, write, produce or perform while promoting our local communities as diverse, inclusive places where people want to live, work, and visit.

ASKING FOR IT

Adrienne Truscott has made a TV series or perhaps the opposite of a TV series. A pilot and 3 episodes. Or a co-pilot or a faux pilot followed by her having/making several episodes. It’s a show, about a show, about comedy and trauma. It’s a traumedy – an intentionally messy meta mixup of how a brain works through trauma, making art and inappropriate jokes along the way. It’s called ASKING FOR IT.
